Guwahati is one of the crowded capital as well as the gateway to Assam State. It bestrides the powerful Brahmaputra River. It was also known as Pragiyotishpur, or the city of the Eastern Light in the very old era. Guwahati means the market for areca nuts, as Guwa means areca and Hut means market.
Even though it is the most significant marketable center of the area, it is not actually divisible from its neighboring rural community of Dispur. Assam Zoo and Botanical Garden
Assam Zoo is a major open field zoo and it is large and well managed spot to see. It houses many animals like leopards, tigers as well as Assam's resident and world famous, one-horned rhinos along with the traditional African two-horned variety. It is located at a distance of 5 kilometers from south-east side of the city centre.
It is open since 8 am- 4 pm in the month of October to March and 7 am- 4.30 pm in the month of April to September and it is closed on Fridays.
Bhubansehwari Temple
Bhubansehwari Temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti and it is one of the nine aspects of the Goddess.
Navagraha Temple
Navagraha Temple was the very old center of astrology and astronomy. This temple was also a center of knowledge and a place of Hindu pilgrimage. This temple is situated on the Chitrachal Hills and towards the north-east of the city centre. One can find the nine planets as their representation as nine lingas inside it.
Museums in Guwahati
Anthropological Museum
Timing is 10 am to 4 pm and it is closed on University holidays.
Assam Forest Museum
Timing is 10 am to 4 pm. and it is closed on Sunday. It has collections of timber, cane and ivory Department of Historical and Antiquarian Research.
Assam State Museum
Assam State Museum is the larger archaeological ethnographic and natural history museum and it is located on the GN Bordoloi Road. It is well worth a visit once. Mainly attractive is the 'walk-through' reconstructed village, the displays of weavings and melodic tools
Timing is 10 am. to 4 pm. on Tuesday to Saturday and 8 am. to 12 noon on Sunday.
